Available in stylish fingerprint-proof purple, red, blue or white/silver covers, the HP essential 15 uses a powerful, AMD Quad-Core A6-6310 processor with 4GB RAM memory, a DVD drive and a 1TB hard disk drive. Curiously, even if it is an entry level laptop, it still packs 802.11ac Wi-Fi and a 4-cell battery, rather than a 3-cell one found on many of its competitors. And while it is a 15.6-inch model, it weighs a mere 2.2Kg, making it almost as light as some Ultrabooks we’ve seen.

7. Asus X555LA

A great all-rounder laptop

i3/i5 processors

1TB hard drive

Stylish finish

From afar, this laptop might be mistaken for a MacBook Pro which tells you a lot about its level of quality. Don’t expect a full metal chassis at this price though but this is probably one of the best looking plastic body in its category. There’s plenty of ports (old and new), 4GB of RAM and a massive 1TB hard disk drive. The cheapest models have a respectable i3 processor, but you can get the more powerful i5 versions for not much more if you need that extra kick. Asus saw it fit to include a DVD writer as well as a 15.6-inch full HD monitor. Despite this large display and the presence of a numeric keypad, it is just a tad thicker and heavier than a chubby Ultrabook.
