The 19th Silicon Gorge Cup 2018 five-a-side football tournament, organised by Mentor, a Siemens business, took place on Thursday 5th of July. The venue was the Goals Soccer Centre in Bristol.
UK Electronics Championship
It is the biggest football tournament for the UK’s electronics design community and is quite rightly called “UK Electronics Championship” with a wide range of teams from Scotland, Wales, Sheffield, Cambridge, Stevenage, Swindon and, of course, Bristol participating.
On a baking hot day a record number of 24 teams took part and companies included Airbus, ARM, Blue Wireless, Broadcom, Cirrus, Dialog, Dyson, Ensilica, Graphcore, Imagination, Infineon, Moortec, Qualcomm, Semtech, Swindon Silicon Systems and Ultrahaptics.
How did it go? To adapt Gary Lineker’s quote for the Silicon Gorge Cup: “Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes (well in this case 10 men chase a ball for 10 minutes) and at the end Cirrus always wins.”
Yes, Cirrus won again. They have now won the trophy for an impressive 4th consecutive time, having beaten Dyson in the final!

And make a note in your diaries for next year: Mentor says it is looking forward to welcoming all teams back next year on Thursday, July 4th.
