“The grass grew tall and Bob Widlar had one of his crazy inspirations. He bought a sheep and tethered it in front of the plant to eat the grass,” recounts Sporck, “then he called the San Jose Mercury and tipped them off to the gag.”

“The Merc ran a photo of the sheep,” adds Sporck, “with a caption something like: ‘Cost control at National Semiconductor’.”
