Intended to celebrate information and communications technology, it was a nice high-tech touch from the South Koreans.
There was actually a robotics theme. For example, the flame was also passed on to Professor Oh Jun-ho, the man responsible for developing the technology, Korea’s first humanoid robot.
The robotics professor Dr. Dennis Hong had also carried the torch on a short trip in a vehicle driven by a robot. And there’s more.
FX-2 – a larger human-operated robot – controlled by a scientist and student – also carried the flame.
You can see them in the video below.
“Today’s special Olympic Torch Relay celebrating ICT was a fantastic display of innovation and creativity,” said PyeongChang 2018 Organizing Committee President Lee Hee-beom.
“ICT is a very important part of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games as we aim to be the most connected and technologically advanced Games ever. Today was a chance for us to show the world some exciting technologies that will be showcased during the Games.”
The Korean Olympic Torch Relay is sponsored by Samsung Electronics, KT and Coca-Cola.
