61% of US drivers feel uncomfortable when overtaking heavy vehicles in wet conditions, says Semcon.
Half of these say it is because an encounter with or takeover of a heavy vehicle can result in a sudden splash of water on the windscreen, completely blocking the view of the driver, before automatic wipers start or the driver reacts.
To solve this technology company Semcon has developed Pro Active Wipers, a new smart software that activates the windscreen wipers already before the water hits the windscreen.
Pro Active Wipers (PAW) use hardware already used in modern cars – camera, radar and rain sensors to analyze the surroundings.
This way PAW can understand and foresee when an approaching vehicle will cause a splash, start the wipers and ensure clear vision.
PAW have been tested in traffic and could be implemented in modern cars through a software update.
